Applied Statistics References

  • Plane Answers to Complex Questions. A great (but slightly classical) treatment of linear models. Free for Stanford students from the link provided.

  • Introduction to Statistical Learning. A very short, quick introduction to statistical learning methods. Because this book doesn't contain much math, it can be read quickly, and it provides a lot of good intuition for very little overhead. Free online from the link provided.

  • Elements of Statistical Learning. This is useful for reviewing linear models (Ch. 3, Ch. 4, and Ch. 18), data splitting and subsampling (Ch. 6), and unsupervised learning (Ch. 12 and Ch. 13). Free online from the link provided.

  • Categorical Data Analysis. This is a standard text on categorical data analysis. It covers some of the material from STATS 305B, but is more applied and less mathematical.

  • Exponential Families course notes by Brad Efron. Free online at the link provided.

  • Multivariate Analysis. This is the classic text on multivariate analysis.
